Tokyo in Cherry Blossom Season: Planning from India

Sakura season (late March–early April) is the most popular time to visit Japan. Here's how to plan a cherry blossom trip from Delhi — flights, hotels, the best parks and avoiding the crowds.

Seeing Tokyo in cherry blossom season is a dream for many Indian travellers. For a few short weeks, parks, rivers and temple grounds turn soft pink, and the whole city seems to step outside to celebrate. The season is beautiful but brief, and it is also one of the busiest times to visit Japan, so a little planning goes a long way. Here is how to time your trip, where to see the blossoms, how to apply for your visa and how to budget sensibly.

When do cherry blossoms bloom in Tokyo?

In a typical year, Tokyo's cherry blossoms (sakura) open around late March, with full bloom often in late March or early April. But it genuinely varies each year with the weather: a warm spell can bring the bloom forward, while a cold snap can delay it.

Two terms are useful:

Forecasts are published from early in the year by the Japan Meteorological Corporation and other Japanese weather services, and updated regularly. Follow them closely. If you are booking months ahead, a trip that covers the last week of March and the first week of April gives you the best chance of catching the bloom somewhere along your route.

Best cherry blossom spots in Tokyo

Ueno Park

One of Tokyo's most famous hanami spots, with long avenues of trees and a lively, festive crowd. It is very busy at weekends, so go early in the morning for a calmer walk.

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

A spacious, beautifully kept garden with many varieties of cherry trees that bloom at slightly different times, which helps if you arrive a little early or late. There is an entry fee and rules are stricter here; alcohol is not allowed, which makes it a good choice for families.

Chidorigafuchi

A moat near the Imperial Palace lined with cherry trees. Rowing boats are often available in season, and the path is especially lovely when lit up in the evening.

Meguro River

Trees arch over a narrow canal for a long stretch, with cafes and food stalls along the way. Evening illuminations are popular. It is a walking spot rather than a picnic spot, so keep moving with the crowd.

Sumida Park

Along the Sumida River near Asakusa, with views of the Tokyo Skytree framed by blossoms. Combine it with a visit to Senso-ji temple.

Combining Tokyo with Kyoto, Osaka and Mount Fuji

Most first-time visitors pair Tokyo with the Kansai region. A comfortable route for 8 to 10 days looks like this:

  1. Tokyo (3 to 4 nights): blossoms, city neighbourhoods, a day trip if time allows.
  2. Fuji Five Lakes (1 night): the Lake Kawaguchiko area offers classic views of Mount Fuji. Being higher and cooler, blossoms here often open later than in Tokyo, sometimes into mid-April, which can extend your chances.
  3. Kyoto (2 to 3 nights): temples, gardens and the Philosopher's Path. Kyoto's bloom is often around a similar time to Tokyo's, sometimes a little later. See our Kyoto sightseeing page.
  4. Osaka (1 to 2 nights): street food, Osaka Castle park and an easy base for Nara.

Our Japan for First-Timers group tour follows a similar classic route, and you can compare more options on our Japan tour packages page.

Japan visa for Indian passport holders

Indian nationals need a visa to visit Japan as tourists. Japan offers an e-visa option for short-term tourism for Indian nationals, alongside the usual application route through the Embassy's designated visa application centres. You will typically need:

Requirements, fees and processing times can change, so check the current process with the Embassy of Japan in India or the Consulates before you apply, and apply well before the spring rush. Our visa services page explains how we can help you prepare documents, though the decision always rests with the Embassy.

Flights from India to Tokyo

Tokyo has two main airports: Narita (NRT), further out, and Haneda (HND), closer to the city centre. Air India, Japan Airlines and ANA have operated non-stop services from Delhi and Mumbai in recent years, and there are plenty of one-stop options via Southeast Asian and Gulf hubs. Schedules change by season, so compare routes on our flight search.

Cherry blossom season is peak demand, so book flights early. Consider flying into Tokyo and out of Osaka (Kansai) to avoid backtracking.

Budgeting and the JR Pass

Japan in spring is not a budget destination, but it can be managed in ₹ terms with sensible choices:

The Japan Rail Pass price rose significantly in 2023. It used to be an almost automatic purchase for visitors; now it only pays off if you make several long bullet-train journeys within its validity. Add up the individual fares for your actual route and compare before you buy. For a simple Tokyo to Kyoto to Osaka trip, individual tickets or regional passes may work out better.

Vegetarian food tips

Vegetarian travel in Japan takes some care, because many dishes use dashi, a stock made from fish. Some tips:

Frequently asked questions

What are the best dates for a Tokyo cherry blossom trip?

Late March to early April is the usual window, but it varies each year. Watch the official forecasts and keep your itinerary flexible enough to cover more than one city.

Do Indians need a visa for Japan?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a visa for tourism. An e-visa option exists for short-term tourism; check the current process with the Embassy of Japan in India.

Is the JR Pass worth it?

Only if your route includes several long bullet-train journeys. Since the 2023 price rise, compare the pass against individual fares for your exact plan.

What if I miss the full bloom in Tokyo?

Head somewhere cooler or higher, such as the Fuji Five Lakes area, where blossoms often open later. Late-blooming varieties in gardens like Shinjuku Gyoen can also help.

Is Japan easy for vegetarians?

It is manageable with preparation. Learn a few phrases, look out for fish stock and use Indian and Buddhist vegetarian restaurants.
