Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital for over a thousand years and remains its cultural heart, with hundreds of temples, shrines and traditional wooden streets. It is also the easiest base for a day trip to nearby Nara.

Nara Park is home to hundreds of free-roaming deer, regarded as sacred messengers in local tradition. The park also holds Todai-ji temple, with its giant bronze Buddha.
