Manali in December sounds like a postcard: snow-covered pines, steaming cups of chai and cosy evenings by the heater. Sometimes it is exactly that. Other times you arrive to cold, clear skies and no fresh snow at all. So is it worth going? For many travellers, yes, as long as you know what to expect and plan around the realities of winter in the hills.
December in Manali is cold. Days can be crisp and sunny, while nights and early mornings often drop below freezing. Higher areas around the town are colder still.
The big question is snow. It is important to be honest here: snowfall is not guaranteed in early December. Fresh snow becomes more likely from late December into January, but even then it depends on the year. Solang Valley, a short drive from Manali, is one of the most popular winter spots. When there is snow, you will find snow play, skiing lessons and other activities, depending on conditions and operator availability. Ropeway and adventure activities can be paused in bad weather, so check on the day.
The Atal Tunnel under the Rohtang Pass connects Manali with the Lahaul valley. On the other side, Sissu often has snow in winter and offers wide, dramatic views. Access can be restricted after heavy snowfall or for safety reasons, and local authorities may control traffic, so check the current status before you set out.
The Rohtang Pass itself is usually closed in winter because of snow. Do not plan your trip around visiting it in December. When it is open in other seasons, a permit is generally required, and rules can change.
Old Manali, with its cafes, wooden houses and relaxed feel, is lovely for slow winter afternoons. The Hadimba Devi Temple, set among tall cedar trees, is beautiful in any season and especially atmospheric when there is snow around it. Snow boots and suits can usually be hired near Solang, but your own warm, waterproof basics will keep you comfortable all trip.
