Gotemba is a town at the eastern foot of Mt. Fuji, close to Hakone. It is a convenient base for Fuji views and is also known for its large outlet shopping centre.
Japan's highest mountain rises to 3,776 m and dominates the skyline around Gotemba. Its near-symmetrical cone is a national symbol and a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site.
Sightseeing boats cross Lake Ashi in Hakone, a crater lake with Mt. Fuji in the background on clear days. The red torii gate of Hakone Shrine stands at the water's edge.
